BaseStone at Digital Construction Week 2017

BaseStone are very excited to be attending Digital Construction Week on the 18th and 19th October at the Excel Centre in London. BaseStone’s founder, Alex, will be presenting not only on one day, but both of them! So you’ll have plenty of opportunities to catch him speaking about productivity in the construction industry (full session descriptions and times below). Last year’s show was a huge success and the BaseStone team had a great time speaking to existing customers, users as well as making many new connections. It is the place to be for anyone looking to explore technology disrupting construction and move towards a more digital and productive industry. Check out the video we created at last year’s Digital Construction Week and register for your ticket here. Be sure to come and visit us at Stand E75, to meet and chat to us (or just to have a play on our arcade machine!). And don’t miss Alex’s sessions listed below.

18th October 13:30-13:45, Tech Stage: Use of Technology to Drive Productivity

Productivity in the construction industry has fallen steadily since the end of the second world war. Technology has been seen as a productivity enabler in many industries, and construction offers the largest potential productivity gain. BaseStone has developed a mobile and web based collaboration tool that links the construction site back to the office and supports over 10 site based activities. We will discuss how BaseStone has enabled engineers on complex projects to increase their productivity by an average of 65% helping reduce costs and risk to project programmes.

19th October 13:00-13:30, Industry 4.0 Stage: Productivity, Smart Contracts and the Blockchain

The construction industry is continuously cited as one of the most challenging industries to adopt change – in particular technological change. Several significant reports point to many industry wide problems that include decreasing productivity and tough payment practices. This session will explore the nature of data flow in the construction industry, the importance of end user engagement to boost productivity, and the application of smart contracts based payments underpinned by modern blockchain technology.

BaseStone supports Skanska’s 4D BIM on the Waterloo Station Upgrade Project

Network Rail’s mammoth £400m Waterloo Station Upgrade Project is set to deliver a 30% increase in the passenger capacity into and out of Waterloo everyday. The improvement work at the UK’s busiest station is being carried out by the Wessex Capacity Alliance – a collaboration between Skanska, Colas Rail, Mott Macdonald, AECOM and Network Rail. The BaseStone team work closely with the Alliance, and Skanska specifically, in supporting their 4D Building Information Modelling (BIM) initiative on the project.

Throughout August, the Wessex Capacity Alliance carried out a blockade where platforms 1–10 were closed so that platforms 1–4 could be extended to accommodate longer trains, and platforms 5–8 could be modified. This was not any old blockade, it was the largest blockade in Europe and the biggest in Network Rail history. The Wessex team had their work cut out as around 300 people were working on site for 24 hours every day.

Coordination was essential to ensure that the blockade ran smoothly. Luckily Skanska’s leading BIM team were working tirelessly on the project to ensure that there was easy access to construction and programme information using the 4D model.

The B1M define BIM asthe process of creating information models or data sets formed of graphical and non-graphical information in a shared digital space known as a Common Data Environment (CDE)”. The 4D Model adds scheduling data to the 3D model and enables effective coordination of the programme information.

Skanska’s BIM team used Synchro Pro to build the 4D model, add the scheduling data and export PDFs and video animations. As BaseStone was already being used on the project for capturing site information, viewing and marking up construction drawings on site, the team knew it was the perfect choice for enabling fast access to the 4D information.

In preparation for the blockade, the BaseStone engineering team built a bespoke integration to Synchro which made the transfer of the 4D information from Synchro to BaseStone seamless. During the blockade, the BaseStone mobile application was used to view the PDFs of 4D data, giving instant access to critical construction programme information. The BaseStone application was kept up to date with the latest version via automatic syncing so that the information was always accurate.

Robert Leach, BIM Coordinator on the project, said ‘throughout the blockade I could see when the next trains were coming and what work was programmed to be taking place because the information was on BaseStone – that was extremely useful’

He added that ‘we could spot potential errors out on site with BaseStone and could get this information back to the planners sooner’.

Once the blockade had commenced, a few delays ensued, but due to the quick access of the 4D model via BaseStone, awareness was raised, and the contingency was enacted, resulting in delivering the project on time.

The successful delivery of the August Blockade was a momentous achievement. Our congratulations go out to the Wessex team and our thanks for choosing to work with BaseStone!

BaseStone nominated as finalists for this year’s Construction Enquirer Award for Best Supplier!

It’s been an exciting few weeks at BaseStone, first it was announced that we have been nominated as a finalist for this years NCE TechFest Award for Increasing Productivity, and now it has just been announced that we are also a finalist for this year’s Construction Enquirer Award for Best Supplier (under £25 mil).

We would like thank all of the thousands that voted and helped BaseStone achieve Top 10 recognition as a finalist!
This recognition highlights some of the great work that our Customer Success, Support, and Professional Services teams do day-in, day-out, and we are extremely proud of every one of them for their continued commitment to helping our customers unlock the true value of going digital with BaseStone!

Both awards aren’t until October but fingers crossed (and toes) that we’ll come home with both and add that to last year’s BCI Highly Commended Award for the Application of Technology that we received for our work with both Costain and Skanska at Crossrails C405 Paddington Contract!
